Our Headlight Restoration Process

Step 1: Surface Assessment

We examine each headlight to determine the level of oxidation and whether there is internal hazing (moisture inside the housing) versus external degradation. External oxidation is what we correct. Internal fogging indicates a seal issue that requires housing repair or replacement - a different service we can advise you on.

Step 2: Masking

The paint and trim surrounding the headlight is carefully masked with automotive tape to protect it from the sanding and polishing process.

Step 3: Multi-Stage Wet Sanding

Starting with a coarse grit and progressively moving to finer grits, we wet sand the headlight surface to remove the oxidized layer. Each grit level removes the scratches left by the previous one, gradually smoothing the surface to a consistent, uniform finish. This step removes the yellowing and hazing at its source - it is not a topical treatment that wears off in weeks.

Step 4: Machine Polishing

After sanding, the lens surface is hazy from the fine sanding scratches. We use a machine polisher with a cutting compound to restore full optical clarity. The lens goes from sanded-matte to crystal-clear during this step.

Step 5: UV Clear Coat Application

The original yellowing happened because the factory UV coating degraded. Without replacing that protective layer, the restored lens would begin re-oxidizing within months. We apply a professional-grade UV-resistant clear coat that bonds to the polished surface and provides long-term protection against future degradation.

Step 6: Cure and Final Inspection

The clear coat is allowed to cure, and we perform a final inspection to ensure both headlights are evenly restored with consistent clarity and a smooth, defect-free surface.
